5 Easy Projects to Do Even if You're Not Swapping Homes

I suddenly find myself compelled to do stuff I've been putting off for ages. First, there was the cleaning and decluttering. Now, the projects begin. Although I had to stop myself the other day when I started Googling "How to replace a tiled kitchen countertop," I have gotten around to a few projects that are easy enough to do even if you aren't planning on house swapping any time soon!

Rethink furniture placement: A piece of furniture that was formerly my landing strip and that no longer works with the furniture in the living room but that I still love, has been moved into the bedroom to hold sweaters.
Rethink the placement of your landing strip: I know that most people have their landing strip by their front door but for many reasons — my front door opens right into my living room, there's a plug here for both my cell phone and a shredder, and because the kitchen counter has always been where things pile up — putting one in the kitchen feels like a more organic place for it.
Add a rug to the kitchen: While my wood floor is a good choice for long bouts of cooking and baking because it's soft and springy and good for my back, a rug brings that pop of color to my otherwise faux-70s rental kitchen that's long been lacking. (I'd actually bought this rug to go by the front door and was just about to return it — it's too thick to work in front of the door — when inspiration struck!)
Use a paint sample to add a pop of color inside a closet: The inside of my linen closet has long been in need of a coat of paint. Instead of tossing the sample pots I'd picked up when I was debating what color to paint my living room, I used one here to spruce things up.
Add an in-sink cutting board: I had a piece of 3/4" plywood cut to fit just within the lip of my sink. The extra workspace is invaluable in my tiled countertop kitchen and can be easily be stored, moved around or used as a platter to serve cheese when company comes over.

Wednesday, I'll share a sixth project that changed my life and that takes under a half hour to do!
