5 Tips for Making DIY Gifts that People Actually Want

We've blogged about great DIY gifts in the past: your favorites, gift guides, and other ideas. But DIY gifts can be tricky. It's one thing to quickly throw something together and something else completely to create a thoughtful gift that will be cherished by the recipient. Find out our tips after the jump.

1 Make something people need or want. A common mistake when creating your own gifts is making something people will never actually use or display. While it is simple to make everyone you know the same gift in assembly line fashion, people's needs are different; no one wants another thing to shove in the back of the closet or toss out. Being thoughtful about what a person really wants or needs for the holidays will only make your gift that much more special.

2 Make it look beautiful. If you are making gifts this year they should look like you could buy them in a store. Take your cues and inspiration from some of the successful etsy stores and other handmade retailers. While a handmade look is lovely, make sure that it elevates simple home crafts to artisan quality. Give people things that they could never imagine being able to make themselves.

3 Use quality materials. High quality materials make for high quality gifts. Lovely woods, beautiful fabrics, incredible yarns and gourmet quality foods can all come together to make unexpected and thoughtful gifts. Show that you care by paying extra attention to what goes into your gift. This can add an element to your gift that the recipient would never dream of spoiling him or herself with.

4 Pay attention to the wrapping. Gorgeous wrapping can only add to your gift. If the gift itself is its own wrapping add a thoughtful tag or note. Show your loved one that you worked hard on this gift from start to finish.

5 Make it an heirloom. High quality construction and care can make your gift a cherished heirloom. Don't assume they will use your gift for only one season or set it out a few times. Plan for your gift to be used for years and construct it accordingly. If the gift is perishable or consumable, place it in a high quality container that can be reused.

Handmade gifts can be incredibly special. They show your loved one that instead of spending the day at the mall you created something that they would cherish. Use these tips to make sure what you are giving this holiday season are things your friends and family will adore.
