What you do first thing in the morning makes a huge impact on the rest of your day and your overall wellbeing. Instead of rushing out the door every morning, try setting your alarm a little bit earlier and moving slowly and more mindfully through your morning with these five easy wellness rituals.

Drink Warm Water With Lemon

Before you caffeinate in the morning, try starting your morning with this simple alternative instead: warm water with freshly squeezed lemon juice. It’s an easy habit that provides instant hydration, detoxifies your system, aids digestion, and provides a yummy boost of vitamin C.

Write in a Gratitude Journal

This is one of my personal favorites. I find that when I take just a few minutes in the morning to make a quick list of things I’m grateful for really helps me kick off the day with a positive mindset. The key is to get really specific about why you’re grateful to really feel the impact.

Set Your Intentions

Setting your intentions every morning is a true game changer. It doesn’t take long at all. You can even do it while you’re doing other things like brushing your teeth, taking a shower, or drinking coffee. Just take a moment to decide in advance how you want your day to go such as “I will nurture my body in ways that feel good today” or “I will remain calm no matter what happens today.” Your intention can change from day to day depending on what’s happening or you can develop signature intentions that guide you consistently every day. Find what feels good.

Dry Brush Your Skin

This Ayurvedic ritual provides so many benefits. It stimulates the lymphatic system, promotes detoxification, improves circulation, and exfoliates your skin. Doing it right before you hop in the shower is best. Be sure to use a brush with natural bristles. Start by gently brushing your feet and work your way up your body in long, upward strokes towards the heart. The whole process tacks only about five minutes onto your normal morning shower routine.

Try Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is another ancient Ayurvedic tradition that is used primarily to improve oral health, but is also known to whiten teeth, boost energy, clear up skin, relieve congestion, alleviate headaches, and draw out toxins in the body. All you do is swish a tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth for 20 minutes first thing in the morning. Then spit it out into a trash can (to avoid clogging your drain) and rinse your mouth and brush your teeth as usual.
