DIY Ideas: 5 Wood Media Console Projects

Making the leap from IKEA flat-pack to grown-up, solid wood furniture seems daunting when you're on the earlier side of the transition. But if you've ever put together a MALM dresser with a cordless screwdriver, you can probably handle one of these wood projects for your living room.

There are endless advantages to making your own furniture. Cost savings is a big deal. Plus you don't have to sacrifice fashion or function when you're building from scratch, because you're the designer. You can design your console's shelves and cubbies to perfectly fit your accessories and devices, and add color and flourish to suit your taste.

To get you started, here are 5 built-from-scratch media consoles from around the web. All you need from here are tools and materials, some amateur woodworking skills, and an intense desire to brag, "Yeah, I made that," to your future house guests.

  1. Ben from Homemade Modern built this media console in 8 hours from $40 worth of plywood and screws. It's simple: the plywood is cut into pre-determined short slabs (according to a plan Ben drafted up beforehand) and screwed together in stacks, forming the vertical supports for the console and shelves inside.
  2. Inspired by a Pottery Barn piece, Ashley from Shanty-2-Chic constructed this apothecary-inspired media console. The drawers on the front actually hide 4 large cabinets for lots of hide-away space.
  3. Jessica of Four Generations One Roof had her eye on the same Pottery Barn console, but decided to build a compact and brighter version for her living room. Again, the drawers on the front are a facade, hiding two large cabinets below.
  4. In need of a long, narrow media console for a long, narrow space, Liz Marie of the eponymous Liz Marie Blog had her husband build this simple, rustic TV console with strong X-supports at each end.
  5. This console from Anne of Annimal Instinct was her and her husband's first furniture project. Crafted from stained pine planks, threaded rods and washers, this slim console is easy to put together and heavy on industrial style.
