“I had been looking for an apartment for a couple of years. In the aftermath of 9/11, I became committed to buying a home in Manhattan,” begins Megan Krieman, who’s been a photo stylist for the past 25+ years specializing in sets, props, interiors, soft goods, and beauty.

“This penthouse condominium apartment was listed for sale in the New York Times real estate print edition on New Year’s Day January 2003. I went two days later to view it and it was love at first sight!” Krieman begins. “The outside space and the interior layout were perfect. It was very livable for such a small one-bedroom. It required a gut renovation and I wanted to create a space in my own style.” After making an offer the next morning, Krieman found out from the agent that a previously approved buyer had pulled it off the market. Krieman says she was “crestfallen,” but the agent offered to call in case anything changed.

Fast forward five months later, and the agent called to say the space was available again. After not hearing back from the agent for a few more months, there was another call in August to let Krieman know it was available, and she made another offer, but did ask to see the space again. After all, it had been almost eight months since she had last been in the apartment, and it had been at night.

“Seeing it in the summer light was even more wonderful,” Krieman admits. “I couldn’t see how beautiful the natural light was on that January night. I closed on the condominium Dec. 18, 2003. Almost a full year after the initial viewing.”

As she mentioned, a gut reno was required, and Krieman chose simple, classic materials where possible. “For example, white subway tiles in the bathroom/kitchen, terracotta floor tiles, and white paint aren’t terribly expensive and look timeless,” she explains. Krieman shares her small home with her husband (they were married in 2016), their 11-year-old pet bunny, Tillie, and occasionally others, too. “In good weather, we often entertain on the terrace and enjoy spending time with my stepdaughters, Julia and Caroline, as well as lots of friends and family.”
