It's often said a picture is worth a thousand words. But sometimes a handful of carefully chosen words can be even more effective than any single moody photo filter. Adding captions to digital photos are this generation's Sharpies onto Polaroids, allowing users to incorporate a personal, inspirational, or spontaneous few words, transforming digital snapshots into virtual postcards for sharing via email, IM, or any social network...

Left: Photo Lettering - Right: Over

If you know typography and fonts, you'll probably recognize the name House Industries. It's no surprise they've launched the Photolettering app; it is surprising it has taken the famed font house this long to share their catalog of highly recognizable fonts. Choose a photo, crop, and add text from a collection of highly stylized lettering options. Just note, the app and the first 6 fonts are free, but each additional font costs 99 cents each, or $9.99 for all 21. Free - Additional Fonts $1 each

A favorite amongst Instagrammers, Over is optimized for adding text onto images for both iPhones and iPads, with an easy to master scroll wheel interface. Spin one direction or back the other way to add words, choose fonts, edit, or share your creation over to Pinterest, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, or to your camera roll. Don't see a font you like? More can be added from freelance artists via in-app purchase or imported from other apps. $2 (currently on sale now for $1)

PicsArt Photo Studio
To summarize PicsArt in a few words: "a digital light room for the pocket". Standard photo editing features like cropping to lighting adjustments are all available, alongside a selection of image accoutrements such as decorative borders, photo effects, collages, and of course, text layering. Additional captions can be drawn directly onto images using a selection of pen or brush nibs for a more personalized message. Free - Also available for iOS

Windows Phone

Left: Picture Perfect - Right: Ribbon

Picture Perfect
Another powerful photo manipulation app with many of the same tool options as a full-fledged desktop application, Picture Perfect is one of the most useful and easy to use Windows Phone image apps we've tested. Whether a photo needs editing or enhancing, Picture Perfect has the tools necessary for making quick adjustments, including adding text onto the photo as a final touch. Color, font, alignment, and positioning are all customizable. Free

It's time to "wrap up" this roundup, and how appropriate we conclude with this decorative Windows Phone photo app. Ribbon offers users the ability to add colorful text laced ribbon graphics for captioning over photos, especially effectve when busy or colorful images need contrast for legibility. The effect is quite lovely, and Ribbon is extraordinarily easy to use for inputting text, choosing colors, and pinching to arrange a carefully arranged sentiment of image with words. Free
