Walking through Michelle’s front door, you see right away from her design aesthetic why she chose this particular home, which she shares with her husband and two young sons. The vaulted ceilings, wood-paneled walls, and windows that are forms of art in themselves, could not be a more perfect frame for the strong ’70s vibe the interior as a whole exudes. But Michelle does not discriminate when it comes to vintage furniture and accessories: “I love it all—’50s, ’60s, ’70s, ’80s.” And indeed, upon closer inspection, there are touches everywhere spanning the decades that add extra interest. The most apparent ones to me were a mauve coffee table and maroon carpeted desk in the upstairs living room that were straight out of the ’80s.
Michelle’s passion for spotting vintage items is a full-time job for her. Literally. For the past year-and-a-half she has been splitting her time between Bellevue and Long Beach, California, where she has owned a home decor store, 6th And Detroit, since April of 2016. She hand-picks items for the shop herself, and so gets first crack at those pieces (is this not the dream?!), and loves to refresh the look of her home from time to time. For this most recent round, she wanted to introduce more color throughout her home—to this end, side tables, throw blankets, and painted mirrors provide pops of red, orange, yellow, and blue in pretty much every room. And all with a beachy splash of California warmth.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
My Style: Mid-century tropical vibes meets cabin retreat.
Inspiration: Travel. The warm sun and ocean breezes. The forest. Textures.
Favorite Element: The mid-century style of the home, built in 1969. Floor-to-ceiling windows, the vaulted ceilings, dramatic architectural details, and the wood paneling throughout the home.
Biggest Challenge: White carpet and all-wood walls with no ability to paint.
What Friends Say: It’s a cozy home where you can find calm and be inspired by unexpected design elements. Plants and thoughtful styling details can be found in every aspect of the home.
Biggest Embarrassment: My garage. It’s scary and I have zero desire to put any effort into it.
Biggest Indulgence: My blush velvet Adrian Pearsall sofa set.
Best Advice: Don’t take decor too seriously.
Dream Sources: Estate sales!
