We have officially crossed the threshold into the dog days of summer (which actually has nothing to do with canines, but rather the dog star Sirius...who knew?). To commemorate the stretch of heat (and lethargy) associated with this period, we scoured Etsy and rounded up 9 super cool, modern pet houses—from cat friendly cardboard to designer edifices—for your furry friends to ride out the season.
If you live in Southern California, you can put in an order for one of these made-to-order mid-century modern dog houses. Honestly, they're so cool, I wouldn't be surprised if they were the spark to the tiny house movement. The one shown above runs around $299, and part of the proceeds of every sale goes to a local dog shelter.
Every cool cat needs a crash pad, especially one made from sustainable walnut and a furry base pillow. It runs $189 with fur insert, $159 without (for the more minimalistic cat or dog, of course).
My enormous, panda-bear sized family cat would never make it through the hole of this modern cat house, but if your feline is normal in build, I'm sure they'll be just fine. In the case that they puff up after a hefty meal, though, the front is removable for easy access. For $450, it's nice to know the 14" structure could double as a low side table (right?).
Now, we never (ever) recommend "decorating" with animals, but decorating with animal furniture is a different story entirely. The walnut table-meets-dog-crate above has a removable sliding door in front and back and would fit into your lovely mid-century modern decor scheme. $699
I wonder if Oscar Wilde was thinking of this cat-shaped cat house when he stated that "life imitates art far more than art imitates life." Well, of course he wasn't, but either way, any kitty who gets to chill out in a cat-shaped wool home should consider themselves quite fortunate. $109
Your pouch will be the trendiest pet in all the land with their very own dog teepee. Kind of makes me jealous, frankly.
If you've ever had a cat, you probably noticed that they only pay attention to the cardboard box the kitty bed you lovingly bought for them to lounge on came in, not the actually bed itself. Enter the Pentagon Cardboard Cat House. Maybe this time your furry friend will actually appreciate (and use) its gift. $32
If you have access to a 3D printer, you can buy the plans for this igloo-like pet house for $3.50 and then DIY the thing from the comforts of your home. What a time to be alive!
This custom dog crate is for the ultra posh and stylish pet, only. Very au courant with its copper piping, it'd probably be a favorite amongst the high-end designer set. $2,945
