9 Green Gift Ideas For the Host or Hostess

It's November already and we are now heading into the full swing of the holiday season. For many, this means holidays dinner invitations that will require a nice gift for your host or hostess. Here are a few ideas:

1. Dishes: a small set of offbeat plates is a great little gift that shouldn't upset a complete set of dishes already owned by the host/hostess. Choose something they'll keep for a long time, like West Elm's Ice Storm Salad Plates designed by David Stark and made with natural and recycled materials.
2. Kitchen Gadgets: I love Fred's ABC ("already been chewed") cookie cutters for a hostess gift. They are reusable, fun and will last many holiday seasons to come.
3. Greeting Cards or Stationary: any host would be thrilled to receive holiday or generic greetings like these letterpress holiday greetings from Sycamore Street Press which are hand-printed on tree-free cotton paper with soy-based inks on a small press.
4. Serving Trays: similar to buying dishes, it's best to buy something small and maybe a little offbeat, like these hand-crafted fair-trade puzzle piece trays from gaiam.com.
5. Chocolate: go for an organic or fair trade chocolate to ensure sustainably farmed cocoa, like Vintage Plantations Truffle Gift Box.

6. Hand Lotion: an excellent option during winter months, especially for a host who may be doing a lot of dishes. Check out L'Occitane en Provence's Olive Tree Organic Hand Cream.
7. Cookbooks: choose something exciting and unique and appropriate to your host. If your hosts are vegetarian or vegan, a cookbook like Veganomicon from Amazon.com is a nice choice.
8. Cookware: Green Pan offers lovely pans with lots of green features.
9. Wine: probably the most classic host/hostess gift, since it never goes bad and can be served at the party. Choose something organic. Check out this post Earth-Friendly Wines for your Earth Day Dinner from The Kitchn for some great ideas.

Other ideas include homemade preserves or something you've made by hand.
