A billion years ago, when we lived in Los Feliz, we would get all dolled up and, with our friend Clea, go to the Derby for their weekly swing lessons. It was a total hoot, and while we could never get past the third lesson, we were always glad to be a part of the movement, since nothing like it existed in New York.

According to Curbed LA, the Derby (at Los Feliz and Hillhurst) received Historic Cultural Monument status following a City Council vote this morning. The Derby had been threatened with demolition by Adler Realty in order to build condos and at one point a Whole Foods.

So get out your snoods and your zoot suits, cause the Derby ain't going anywhere, daddy-o!
