Providence's steep hills offer some killer views, and this residence designed by Friedrich St. Florian Architects takes full advantage of them. We're not surprised that Rhode Island Monthly chose it as the winner of its 2009 Design Awards.
The contemporary structure is certainly different from the many historic homes and buildings that dot College Hill, but it doesn't feel out of place in the diverse neighborhood that includes the campuses of Brown and RISD. The house is designed with a contemporary sense of restraint, but the soaring windows that look out on the state capitol keep the city's rich architectural history in plain view.
