When I started thinking about a nursery for my baby girl, I knew I wanted it to be feminine but not too girly and modern but comfortable. I love the color coral and I thought it would be perfect because I didn't want the traditional girly pink or purple, but like I said, still wanted it to be feminine. I decided to go with gray and coral with aqua accents. In addition to the colors, I wanted some kind of theme, but nothing too over the top. I started scouring the internet for ideas and landed on owls...so many super cute owl ideas out there.

I found a modern crib that I loved - the Oeuf - but it was way out of my price range as I was trying to work on somewhat of a budget. So I found a lookalike - the baby mod Olivia from Walmart. Got great reviews and has a fantastic modern design.

My next step was to figure out my crib bedding as the rest of the decor would be centered around that. I couldn't find anything in the coral shade that I was looking for so I decided to go the custom bedding route. I found a wonderful seller on Etsy and she made my crib sheets and skirt, changing pad cover, curtains and boppy cover. I decided to go with a modern chevron and dot motif which you'll see is strung throughout the nursery (along with the owls).

Next up was furniture... We knew we wanted a couch, actually a pullout couch, because this was to be used as our guest room too. We didn't want to spend too much so we settled on the Ikea Ektorp (in Svanby Gray). While at Ikea we looked at dressers and bookshelves and realized the price was right for these modern pieces that would fit perfectly. So we went for the Ikea Malm 6-drawer dresser (to also be used as a changing table) and the Expedit 4 cube bookshelf (to be used for books and toys). I also got the Hemnes nightstand/end table that I adorned with an aqua nob from Anthropology. After a while we realized we needed another piece to put the video monitor, sound machine and other odds and ends on, so we got a small, white leaning bookshelf from Amazon.

I then started looking for my accent pieces. Etsy was an incredible resource for this. I got the diaper caddy with self selected fabrics on the inside (gray chevron) and outside (gray with coral dots). I got an owl pillow that I love with self selected coral chevron wings. I got a fabric letter A with self selected fabric on the front (coral and white stripe) and the sides (aqua and white dots). And finally I found the cutest mobile with coral, gray and aqua felt owls! In terms of other accent pieces, I found the owl lamp at Target; I had to change out the black shade it came with for a coral shade I found at World Market. I found a silver owl cookie jar at West Elm on clearance and figured it was cute and we'd find some good use for it. I got two aqua chevron picture frames from Anthropologie that I filled with pictures from Anabella's newborn photo shoot. I bought three clover threshold mirrors from Target that we painted coral (this was a big job managed by my hubby) for above the couch. I bought aqua bins from bed bath and beyond for toys, etc. I found a gray woven felt hamper at West Elm.

And finally...needed some wall art to bring it altogether. After searching and searching I came across a perfect print by Audrey Jeanne Ulule on a UK website, and they agreed to ship to the US - perfect! I also had three special gifted accent pieces: a gray and white chevron and polka dot quilt made by a family friend, a gray blanket knitted by another family friend and a coral and aqua pillow (fabric purchased on Spoonflower.com) made by my mom.

Next I had to decide on a color to the paint the walls. Gray is not an easy color as it so often has undertones of blue, green, etc. So we picked up a few samples from Benjamin Moore and finally decided on the color Stonington Gray which we ended up being very happy with!

The final piece we had to find was a rug. We decided to go with a solid, as not to add another pattern to the room, and thought gray would be best. We needed it to blend with the dark gray couch and the light gray walls. We found a rug at Ikea that was called "off white", but it looked gray to us so we gave it a try and it was perfect — the Alhede.

We were very pleased with the end product and feel we have a calm, warm, serene room for our baby girl. She seems to like it too :)

Thanks, Susi!
