My husband is Greek, I'm American, and we met when we both lived in London. We've done a lot of traveling with friends, and our rallying cry on these trips became, “Are you ready, Explorers??” Somewhere along the way we realized that babies are the besst explorers, because they’re exploring everything all at once.

And that is how we decided that a Moroccan Nursery would be a great way to instill a love of the exotic in our tiny explorer. Plus I’ve decorated some Moroccan bedrooms for myself in the past, and always found them to be extremely soothing and stimulating at the same time.

The baby's room is pretty small, and has only one window that just looks onto the neighbor's house (about 5 feet away) but does let in a lot of light. People tend to think that brighter colors always maximize light, but I disagree - colors with depth, plus mirrors and a host of indirect light sources, can maximize the light you have and make a very appealing mood. For maximum atmosphere, I draped the walls with fabric, and put curtains around the crib, then used translucent contact paper to make a Moorish pattern on the window, and draped it in unlined cream silk.

I had a lot of existing Moroccan/vaguely exotic accessories and furniture we could use but we definitely needed more "baby stuff". We used a combination of things from our travels around the world, used or modified furniture, sewing projects I did myself, and inexpensive finds from around the SF Bay Area. One big impact item here is the dresser/changing table, which I painted to look like it's tiled and wood-inlayed, based on a pattern we saw on a trip to the Alhambra in Granada, Spain - I posted a "how-to" here.

Obviously this is going to require some modification as the baby grows, but I love projects like this and look forward to working on them.

Thanks, Angela! Readers, see more of Perry's nursery on Angela's blog.
