A Playful Room for Rhys

A Playful Room for Rhys

Name: Rhys (Almost 4)
Location: Los Angeles, California

Our big guy never really took to his crib or his toddler bed, so in an effort to encourage him to try sleeping in his own room we got him the coolest bed we could find: a loft bed with a slide and a play space underneath.

The room is quite small - about 100 square feet, so we had to cycle through every possible furniture arrangement before finding a setup that made sense. We finally managed it though, and we're really pleased with the results. Rhys loves sleeping in his new bed and, even though this bed takes up so much more space than the crib did, the play area under the loft has actually increased the play space in the room.

We purchased the slide bed via Amazon, and I replaced the play area curtains with ones made from fabrics Rhys and I picked out together. The sheets are Lego Chima themed per Rhys' request, and I topped them of with a white and orange duvet from IKEA to tie the bedding colors in with the existing room colors. The play table is one I upcycled a few years ago from an IKEA LACK coffee table (I mod-podged a London Tube map to the surface and added a bumper around the top border). My dad and I made the Vinylmation collection display shelf using a Mickey Mouse shaped wood cutout purchased on Etsy. The blue flying dragon was made by my sister-in-law. The framed Disney records have been in Rhys' room since it was a nursery, and are made up from my husband and my own childhood collections and from thrift store finds. The two framed 7 inches were put out by my husband's Indie label. My other favorite pieces in the room are the space station lamp (Amazon) and the battery powered LED star wall light (Target). My kid also has an X wing fighter and two electric guitars on his walls because, why not?
