A Vanity in the Living Room?

A Vanity in the Living Room?

Q: My decorating style leans towards eclectic. I have mostly vintage pieces with a few modern items mixed in. One of my favorite pieces is a 1920s vanity that has been passed through the family. I used to have it in the living room. I loved how the mirror bounced light around the room, and simply enjoyed having it on display.

Books and pictures were set on it as a bookshelf of sorts. Guests seemed to often think it was weird, though. In my new place, I'd love to move it to the living room again, and am wondering why this is seen as so odd? People are often using furniture in interesting ways, and I couldn't even find a Google image result with something similar anywhere other than a bathroom or bedroom...

Note that the picture currently is from the bedroom, hence the jewelry and more personal items.
