Name: Hayley Orrantia and Greg Furman
Location: Los Angeles, California
Type of Home: House
Years lived in: 1 year, owned

Actress Hayley Orrantia, who stars in ABC’s television show “The Goldbergs,” is also a talented singer and songwriter. But she also has a passion for another creative field, one in which her parents are familiar. Hayley loves interior design, and she also buys, flips, and renovates homes alongside her father in Nashville, Tennessee, when she’s not filming. “My mom, Melody, is a real estate agent and she originally found the listing. As my mother, she knew this house was going to rock my world,” Hayley writes. “We saw it the next day and it was everything I could have dreamed of! The neighborhood is quiet and quaint and the house itself had been beautifully remodeled. The previous owners were musicians and had converted the garage to a recording studio, which is exactly what Greg and I had been praying for.”

The home’s proximity to nature was also a huge win for the couple. “One of my favorite aspects of the property is this stunning mulberry tree in the backyard. Our covered deck feels more like a living room and leads straight out the tree, wrapped in lights. You feel like you enter a whole other place back there. It truly is magical.” The backyard isn’t the only way in which nature is highlighted; Hayley’s brought in nods to nature throughout the home’s design, from the moss-filled nooks on either side of the fireplace, to a gorgeous green painted arch behind the bar, to a rustic custom wooden art piece in the dining room. All elements that work together to achieve a space perfect for one of the couple’s favorite pastimes: hosting friends. “We’re just so glad we could curate a space that is warm and inviting for friends and family to come visit anytime!” she writes.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

My Style: I guess I would call my style modern bohemian. There are a lot of warm tones, natural materials, and lots of plants.

Inspiration: I’ve always kept a bohemian element to my apartments before, but I’ve slowly started adding in bits of mid-century, industrial, and contemporary. I really love Diane Keaton’s book “The House That Pinterest Built” because she does a great job of mixing old and new pieces that make a room feel timeless. I also love Joanna Gaines’s book “Homebody.” It really helped me define my style.

Favorite Element: There is a large window over the kitchen sink that would normally look straight into the neighbor’s house. The previous owners had added a wooden living plant wall outside that is truly an art piece. I had my friends Michael and Patrick of Marston and Brunt Art Studio come in to revamp the wall with some lush greenery. There are all kinds of plants flowing over each other and makes for such a stunning moment. My favorite, though, is when it is illuminated in the evening by timed outdoor lights and acts as the coolest night light imaginable!

Proudest DIY: Our pandemic DIY project took place in the living room where Greg and I added a painted green arch behind a mini bar. I had seen the trend on TikTok and fell in love with it. It was wasted space before and now it has purpose and adds such a unique touch to the room.

Biggest Indulgence: I’m pretty frugal for the most part, but when it came to finding the right piece to live behind the couch, I had to splurge. Our couch sits in the center of the living room with the back facing the kitchen, so I wanted something to go behind it that felt intentional. I found this gorgeous credenza from CB2 that doubles as a turntable stand. We have a beautiful record player and a ton of vinyls that needed a home and I could not have imagined a more perfect place for it.

Please describe any helpful, inspiring, brilliant, or just plain useful small space maximizing and/or organizing tips you have: I’m a big fan of furniture that is multi-purpose, especially if you have a small space. For example, we have a coffee table where half of the table lifts up into a desk plus there’s storage inside. I also have a wire metal side table where I hide my pillows and throw blankets inside. The more use you can get our of your furniture that can double as storage, the better! It doesn’t hurt if it works with your aesthetic, too.

Finally, what’s your absolute best home secret or decorating advice? Like I said earlier, I am pretty frugal so I try to save money where I can. I often search for furniture that I am in the market for on apps like OfferUp. If you type in the search bar certain brands you like (West Elm, CB2, Magnolia Home, etc) you’ll often find the item you’re looking for but with a great discount. Lately because of Covid, furniture has been on back order from my favorite stores and I can find them near me for cheaper and available right away on apps like that.
