Rachel wrote about AirRenew Gypsum Board after visiting GreenBuild Chicago, but it's such a cool product, it's worth revisiting. Unlike traditional sheet rock, AirRenew captures VOCs in the air and sequesters it inside the board itself.
AirRenew acts by absorbing the VOCs it comes in contact with. Such VOCs chemically react with a special additive in the gypsum core that breaks them down into safer, inert compounds. This new compound is then captured and sequestered into the board. Since air naturally circulates, the more AirRenew you have in your home, the more VOCs will be captured. According to Certainteed, manufacturer of Air Renew, in testing done with a high concentration of formaldehydes 122 ppb (much higher than most homes will ever see), a resulted 70% reduction was seen.
AirRenew is recommended for buildings with stringent indoor air quality requirements, including schools and doctors offices. However, it'd also be great for people with asthma, and those concerned about air quality.
