A few years back a good friend of mine, a dedicated gamer who competes competitively, built himself a head-to-head gaming cabinet to keep his fighting game skills honed from the comfort of his garage. As impressive as that was, as a kid of the 80's, this DIY NES themed gaming cabinet touched an even greater nostalgic nerve...
Reddit submitter mystery_smelly_feet constructed a shrine to NES memories into upright arcade cabinet form using MDF boards, Happ competition sticks and buttons, an Ultimarc trackball, and even genuine "Player 1" and "Player 2" buttons from an arcade machine supplier for full effect. The whole rig is powered by MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) for all of his favorite gaming titles.
Perhaps most impressively the custom paint job in the theme of a classic NES controller was attained by color matching a real NES system at a Sherwin-Williams paint shop, the cherry on top of this impressive DIY feat.
