Amazon Customers Can Tell Alexa to Plant a Tree This Earth Day

This year, getting involved in Earth Day, April 22, is as easy as saying “Alexa, grow a tree.”

In honor of Earth Month, Amazon is teaming up with One Tree Planted to allow customers with Alexa-enabled devices to donate $1 to plant one tree simply by asking Alexa to “grow a tree.”

Customers can also keep track of how many trees they’ve planted through their Amazon Pay account. 

AmazonSmile shoppers can also select One Tree Planted as their organization of choice, which allows customers to donate funds directly to One Tree Planted every time they shop on the AmazonSmile platform.

Amazon has also pledged to donate $1 million to One Tree Planted to help the organization plant one million trees by December. The donation will go toward a 34-acre surface mine restoration in Appalachia, a forest fire restoration project in Mendocino National Forest in California, a fruit tree-planting initiative in India, and an orca whale protection plan in the Pacific Northwest.

Since being founded in 2014, One Tree Planted has planted over 40 million trees in more than 23 countries. 23.1 million of those trees were planted in 2021 alone.

The mass planting of trees is hugely beneficial to the climate, biodiversity, and communities around the world. Deforestation due to commercial harvesting, development, and natural disasters reached an all-time high in 2015, and One Tree Planted has been working diligently to rebuild the global forest cover since.

“Reforestation can restore damaged ecosystems, stabilize soil, support the water cycle, and slowly recover nature for many years to come,” the org states on its website.
