An All-Inclusive Water Usage Calculator

When it comes to water usage, it's hard to tell exactly how much we use each day, including the water it takes to produce our food and keep us moving and clothed. Enter the water usage calculator at National Geographic: it even includes everything and, of course, the kitchen sink.

Use the calculator to find out how your water usage stacks up to that of the average American, with plenty of helpful (and interesting) tips along the way. Like the fact that actually turning on a faucet or water-using appliance at home only accounts for 5% of our water usage!

We found that our usage was about one-third less than the average for a number of reasons, but mainly because we're vegetarian (and since this calculator breaks it down into how many servings of beef, pork, and poultry are consumed each week). We thought it was interesting to watch the level drop when we answered questions about our meat consumption.

We found it very informative, and it's cool to see how you can pledge to use less water every day by making small changes.

To find out how you fare in the face of your fellow Americans, plug your usage into the water footprint calculator here.

Find out more about the calculator, its methodology, and water-saving tips here at National Geographic.
