Real Life Rental Challenge: A Genius Update For A Bad ’80s Bathroom Light
There’s nothing worse than those builder grade vanity strips in bathrooms, the ones that absolutely scream “HI, I’M CHROME AND WAS SENT FROM THE ’80s TO DATE YOU!!” As a renter your options are limited, but I came up with a smart way to deal with these common eyesores. Instead of swapping it out with a new light fixture, I decided to instead embrace the challenge and work with what I had. I couldn’t paint it, because that was permanent.

Do You Really Know What You’re Sleeping On?
We spend about one-third of our lives in bed, but we usually don’t put a lot of thought into how healthy of an environment it is. Avocado Green Mattress set out to change all that when they designed an affordable mattress made from non-toxic, natural, and organic materials. Is going natural at bedtime that important? Yes! Unlike the delightful “new car smell,” “new mattress smell” — aka “off-gassing” — can keep you up at night.

Minimalism is Dead. Long Live…Minimalism?
When I first started blogging for Apartment Therapy, there was a certain minimal, Scandinavian look that was absolutely everywhere. You’ve probably seen it: white floor, white walls, neutral palette, very little furniture (although quite possibly with a sheepskin draped over a chair.) Over the years, I’ve watched the interiors on our site (and others) grow more cozy, cluttered, and colorful. I’ve read countless articles about maximalism being the new minimalism.

This Painting By Britney Spears Raised $10K for Charity
Britney Spears is an undoubtedly an artist of her generation—and now she can claim that title in a more traditional sense. The pop star can add “painter” to her resume, and one whose work even sells for $10,000. All in the name of charity, of course. In early October, the pop star posted a video to Instagram spending a whimsical afternoon in her Southern California home.

The One “Boho” Piece Definitely Worth Adding to Your Home
The beauty of the boho look lies in how easy it is to make it your own. You don’t need to commit to the whole ’70s-California-art-teacher aesthetic to nod to the trend. Instead, an accessory or two is just enough. The trinity of boho decor is comprised of three key pieces: Kilim rugs, macrame wall hangings and rattan ottomans.

Before & After: A Perfectly Nice Kitchen Gets Unbelievably Better
As kitchens go, this one isn’t too shabby. There are really nice white countertops, classic subway tile on the backsplash, and basic wood cabinets that look perfectly sound and in good condition. There’s no horribly dated light fixtures, no crappy peeling wallpaper, or any odd woodwork that needs to be ripped out. Even the walls are white and ready to go. Not much you can do to improve this space, right? So very, very wrong.

The Major Home Rule You Might Break This Holiday
Most of us have those few die-hard house rules that no one dares contest. (Maybe it’s the way you put toilet paper on the roll or what gets put in the dishwasher versus hand washed.) But in a time of year when guests frequent our homes and a bustle of activity means that not everything will go your way, consider letting go a little bit and embracing a gracious spirit of hospitality that puts your visitors’ comfort ahead of your own.

What Cleaning Tasks Do You Find Gross Yet Satisfying?
Cleaning is, by nature, kind of gross. I mean, sure, your home ends up clean afterwards, but you’re taking on dirt and dust and grime so you’re going to get a little dirty in the process. And even though some tasks are dirtier than others, it’s often those really nasty tasks that are the most satisfying to finish. Maybe because it feels good to take your frustration out on grout that needs a particularly good scrub, or maybe you just love a job well done.

The Modern Take on Tufting You’re Going to Love
I’m at a loss to explain how this happens, but sometimes something that’s been around for a really long time suddenly feels very, very now. Case in point: channel tufting. Before & After: A Living Room Goes From Perfectly Fine to Flat-Out Perfect
See? Wow! Some of the changes in Ashley Rose of Sugar & Cloth’s living room are ambitious and intimidating—the wainscoting, the (SPOILER ALERT) fireplace—but others are more doable while still having a major effect. Swapping out the art, throw pillows, and accessories made such a difference, and the new sofa and rug turned a cozy living room into a dreamy, airy space.

11 Projects That Solve What To Do With All Those Winter Boots
If you’re like me, you’ve always had a growing pile of shoes in your vestibule/ entryway/mudroom. Lowes Welcomes A Major Brand and Only Those Missing Sears Care
Growing up, I remember hitting up small-town hardware stores for quick needs like electrical tape or a pack of screws. If we wanted something fancier, we would head to the local mall and peruse Sears’ bigger selection of pretty tools and yard machines. Despite my mother’s grumbling comments about the cost of lawn mower parts, the tools still all felt so glamorous under those retail lights.

A Tiny Apartment That Transforms Into a Super Efficient Space
As someone who used to work as an architect and now writes about small spaces, I love seeing how a clever design can completely transform a tiny space. At first glance, this little Italian apartment did not seem very promising. Its 317 square feet (29.5 square meters) were awkwardly chopped up into a tiny bedroom, barely large enough for a bed, an oddly placed bathroom, and a combination living room/dining room/kitchen that was strangely shaped and a bit cavernous.
