This is What an Asterisk on a Costco Label Means
Costco is like a magical fantasyland full of oversized surprises. A lot of the time, you don’t know what you will find there. Sure, there are some classics. Kirkland-brand olive oil and apple pies are beloved standards that you can count on seeing virtually every time you walk through those warehouse doors. Not everything at Costco sticks around, however, and a great deal found one day might be gone the next.

Bad News: L.L. Bean Got Rid of Its Lifetime Return Policy
It’s a sad day for L.L. Bean devotees. We’re crying into our Bean boots, because the Maine-based retailer has gotten rid of its legendary lifetime return policy. The generous return policy meant that even if the same backpack you had from middle school got a rip, you could exchange it for a new one. That all changed Friday morning when the company posted a letter to customers explaining the update.

Before and After: A Rotting Bathroom Is Now Beautifully Rustic
Melanie bought a house that was previously a rental for many years, and the bathroom was just not loved and cared for all that time. Not only was the space ugly, it had some real issues, including potential mold. When she and her husband renovated, the only thing they kept was the tub (and even that was refinished) … Wow! The bathroom is now so graphic and modern, that little sink is the cutest thing ever, and the vanity is ridiculously cool.

The 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea will kick off Friday, February 9 with the opening ceremonies — likely to be an explosion of flying colors, multi-cultural unity and fanfare. With thousands of Olympians converging, we started wondering about their temporary homes and of course, what they look like. We mined the available photos and athletes’ social feeds to get a behind-the-scenes look.

Buyer Beware or Bad Rap: Should You Avoid Builder Grade?
If you google “builder grade,” you’ll see a ton of posts celebrating basic rooms getting a major upgrade—or getting the boot entirely. The builder grade materials in questions will inevitably be described as “sad,” “generic,” “cheap,” “boring,” and, in some cases, “orange-y.” But are builder grade materials all bad? What even are they? Let’s explore… Let’s start with the basics.

So… Is it OK to Pee in the Shower?
We’ve all been there. Just after the ceremonial un-robing that occurs prior to hopping in the shower and closely following the forthcoming cascade of water from the shower head — your bladder beckons. But it seems like a lot of work to get out of the shower, grab a towel, dry off, and make your way back to the commode. So you ask yourself the age-old question, “To pee or not to pee?” Yep, we’re going there. Don’t worry; we’re all friends here.

You’ve been setting aside money for a down payment for a few years and you’ve met your goal. Your online browsing has turned to semi-regular weekend open house hunting, and now you’re thinking about getting an agent of your own. Is it time? Are you really ready to buy a house? In Praise of Eating Dinner in Total Silence
When my husband and I got married four years ago, a friend of mine who had already celebrated several wedding anniversaries gave me one piece of unsolicited advice: Sometimes you’re going to eat dinner in silence — and you both should be okay with that. It’s not like we had never eaten in silence (or near silence) before. We had already been dating for many years and had hundreds (thousands?) of meals together.

The Clever Small Space Kitchen Hack Hiding in IKEA’s Children’s Section
Touring Mona Hamilton’s 650-square-foot Montreal apartment is very inspiring. Not only is it a soothing, lovely space with enviable elements (the removable wallpaper in the kitchen being one of them), but it also features a hack that could be a great space saver for small kitchens or kitchens that need more counterspace. And the source of this hack’s furniture elements is rather surprising. Hacking IKEA components is NOT a new idea. (We have even published one or two or 100s before).

4 ‘Lady’ Products Women Never Asked For (and Definitely Don’t Need)
Hey gals! Sorry if you couldn’t hear me over the loud crunching of your traditional chip. In case you missed it, Doritos supposedly announced a Lady Dorito over the weekend and people were rightfully incensed. They’ve since denied that a chip-for-galz was in the works, but given the long line of utterly insane “for her” products, you can’t really blame people for thinking it was serious.

How to Throw a 30-Something Dinner Party on a 20-Something Budget
I’ve always been in love with the idea of hosting dinner parties. My mother used to host game nights at our house when I was a kid, and she’d also throw parties for milestones throughout the year. As a 20-something adult, I’ve loved venturing into the playful, well-appointed world of hosting. But working with a tight budget, mismatched flatware (I know we have another fork somewhere around here), and small spaces means the way you go about it looks a little differently.

This Writer’s Retreat is the Most Stylish Tiny House We’ve Seen Yet

In it, I think spare yet beautiful thoughts, and commit them to paper (always paper), like some modern-day Thoreau, but with more elevated taste. Slate-clad, my cabin stands out against the wilderness, like the simplicity of my new life against the chaos of the world. This is that cabin.
