We’re living in a world where anything is possible. I can talk to my light bulbs. My plants water themselves. There’s an electric car floating out in space somewhere right at this very moment. The sky’s the lim— ok the sky isn’t even the limit anymore. Mind-blowing technological breakthroughs are happening across every industry every day, proving that anything we can dream up is possible.

This Ever-Changing Map of a Made-Up Place Is Possibly Crazy, Definitely Beautiful
I love maps. Our walls are littered with them; even our shower curtain was a world map for awhile. And one of my favorite pastimes as a kid was dreaming up and then mapping imaginary countries, inspired by the fictitious atlases in books like The Phantom Tollbooth and The Hobbit. So when my wife and I discovered “Jerry’s Map” at the American Folk Art Museum in New York City last month, I was giddy.

The ‘Slip Chair’ That Tricks You Into Thinking Its Unstable (Even Though it Totally is)
Who doesn’t want to be comfortable when sitting? Well, that’s kind of the entire point of plopping your weary bones down on the nearest piece of cushy furniture, no? Sure, but after laying eyes on this Slip Chair that Snarkitecture crafted for Portugal-based design firm UVA, one might begin to question whether sitting comfortably is even an option at all. (Hint: It totally is).

Before and After: An Empty Entryway is Now a Functional Triple Threat
This shoe storage had its issues — scuffs, unpainted areas, general ricketiness — but it’s still better than my Heap O’Shoes. Can the less-than-ideal but serviceable shoe storage racks be improved upon? Is attractive, accessible, adaptable, practical shoe storage actually possible? We shall see. This is amazing! It looks incredibly cool, and the shoes are within easy reach of both the door and the shoe-putting-on bench.

This Tiny House Builds Up Instead of Out
As small space living gets more and more popular, the tiny houses and micro homes have become sleeker, smarter and well, taller. This skinny micro home was designed by Dutch firm Ana Rocha Architecture and was given the extra appropriate name, The Slim Fit. It looks sort of like a sexy Lincoln Log and offers 538 square feet of living space, spread out across three floors. The exterior is covered Ayous hardwood, which was laid out vertically emphasizing the length of the building.

The Latest Hotel Amenity is Designed to Save the Environment and Put Money Back in Your Pocket — Would You Opt In?
When you stay at a hotel, are you the “Do Not Disturb” type, or a “Service, Please” traveler? While the hospitality industry has traditionally erred on the side of service, some hotels now allow visitors to opt out of in-stay housekeeping — whether to protect the environment or their own privacy — often in exchange for perks like food and beverage credit or rewards points. I, for one, think this is brilliant.

10 Items in the IKEA Kids Section You’ll Want for Yourself
Before I had kids, I would typically hightail it through the children’s section of IKEA watching to be sure my toes didn’t get squashed by a rocking moose. But with two kids at home, I now know my DUKTIGs from my LATTJOs and my FLISATS from my MAMMUTs. And, I can tell you, there are some good grownup finds in there that you might be overlooking. Let me show you a few… IKEA was smart to design a very basic dollhouse, the FLISAT ($29.

Thinking About Renovating? Think About This First
We love a good kitchen reno: the Pinterest boards, the paint samples, the Instagram feeds full of possibilities. But it’s easy to get so hung up on your dream look that you forget you’re making it a reality—and reality means looking past the finishes. There are two words you need to think about before starting your next renovation, and they’re not subway tile. So, let’s talk about universal design.

Our Favorite Water Filter Is Currently Marked Down On Amazon
Water filters have two primary benefits: they can remove contaminates from tap water, and even change the taste, making it cleaner and crisper. The only problem? Installing one in your pipes can be expensive, not to mention a pain (and perhaps even impossible in rentals). But pitchers and faucet attachments are often unsightly, favoring utility over design.

Why It’s Smart to Put a Pair of Tights On Your Vacuum Cleaner
Size doesn’t matter. We each possess a few tiny things (earring backs, a sentimental ring, an important LEGO piece, a single minuscule screw that apparently is supposed to hold your entire IKEA table together) that, if lost, would bring about certain ruin. OK maybe not ruin — but losing them would definitely put a kink in an otherwise pleasant day. So file this tip away for later.

Parting With My Studio Apartment—and My Independence
When my partner and I left Chicago for San Francisco, we decided to hold off on moving in together. We hadn’t been dating for very long and wanted to establish our own, independent selves and lives in the new city. Plus, I had never lived by myself. I was enamored with the idea of creating my very own home, with no bathrooms to share or aesthetics to clash. I fixed my own appliances (with a little assistance from YouTube) and never split the rent or the bills for the wifi.

Just be sure to use wall anchors for heavy loads. Fold-down tables are a classic space saver.
