Title: Candlestick Lamp
Artist: Marilyn + Peter Frank
City: Live Skokie, IL, Work Chicago, IL.
Size: Approx. 17″ H x 6″ W x 6″ D
Media: Blown glass
About the piece: Single-piece mouth blown glass table lamp. Transparent amber with organic color application of white and beige. Drilled and assembled with electrical components. Uses 60 watt bulb or less.
Simple in form, with organic neutral tones, this lamp expresses F2’s interest in combining basic forms with organic color applications to create a layered, undulating effect that alludes to natural processes such as the growth of plants, the movement of clouds, or the flow of water. When illuminated, the piece shows a layering effect created by its color application that adds to its richness and depth.
About the artists: Peter and Marilyn Frank are the creative minds behind F2, a collaboration that began almost immediately after the pair met in New York City in 1999. From the very start, they’ve worked to create a diverse body of work by merging both of their talents in fine art and graphic design. Their work encompasses glass design, painting, video, mixed media sculpture, video, photography and furniture design. Peter and Marilyn never limit themselves to any particular medium or technique, believing that all art has its place and importance, regardless of market, medium, or function. However, their voice and the clear identity that emerges will always remain as the unifying thread within the work.
Most recently, F2’s mixed media sculpture was shown at ~scope art fair in Miami, represented by Kasia Kay Art Projects. In 2006 they were recognized for their unconventional glass design series “Chemistry Set” at Design Within Reach’s annual juried competition, “Modern+Design+Function: Chicago Furniture Now.” Their glass design and mixed media sculpture can be found within the collections of national and international art and design collectors. Work by F2 has been featured in various publications such as Home, Domino, Lucky, House & Garden, Chicago Magazine, and Interior Design.
Marilyn and Peter opened F2 Lab in Chicago’s West Loop during the summer of 2005. F2 Lab is the couple’s studio and alternative gallery space which facilitates the production and display of their own creative product. It also exists as a venue to support and promote the work of new and emerging artists and designers. Watch the F2 site for updates on upcoming shows curated by F2, including “Gifts,” a mixed media group show taking place in the fall of 2007. Artists will include Duncan R. Anderson (duncanranderson.com) and Brian Yates (brian-yates.com) from Chicago; and Candy Depew (candycoated.org), from Philadelphia.
