Calypso, Christiane Celle's rockin' creation that has now sprouted home stores as well, is a beautiful melange of French, Island and SoHo chic. We've called it funky, eclectic, and colorful and it is, with the colors changing with the seasons. The only drawback has been in the furniture selection, which wants to be a bit more classic and muted than the wild colors of blankets, lamps and other accessories. Enter Caravane.
Over the Christmas holiday we noticed that a really striking new line of low, soft, sculptural sofas and beds had snuck in. Covered in rich linen, the shape and the styling was decidedly not something that we had ever seen (all the pics you see here are from Caravane's website).
Caravane is a Parisian company with three super cool stores that is Calypso Home on steriods. With more of a Northern African influence, Christian Celle has appropriated Caravane's low slung Divan line to great effect. The Divan line has a large, deep sofa as well as a number of "lits" or beds that look like daybeds or ottomans (in all of the pics you see here).
Our eye is on the Divan de la Princesse au Petit Pois (ie. the princess and the pea), a narrow daybed that is also not too long and would make a great sofa/extra bed in our small apartment (above and below). It's design features a soft base frame with three thin futon-like mattresses on top. It's a great piece that is both simple, unique and easy to dress up with pillows to fit any occasion.
Since flying to Paris is so expensive right now, we're glad that Calypso is bringing it over to us. This is a line worth checking out.
