People are spending more money on their pets than ever before. The American Pet Products Association estimates that pet owners will spend over $75 billion on their furry friends in 2019. And yet, the market is still made up mostly of dog products that look like, well, dog products—not that there’s anything wrong with that. But some pet owners want items that are more thoughtfully-designed.

Without better (and affordable) alternatives, dog owners are forced to buy whatever products they can find. I have two dogs, and I can’t tell you how many dog beds, toys, bowls, leashes, and other items we’ve bought and said “Well, we don’t love it, but it’s the least terrible option of the bunch, so it’ll do,” then proceeded to feel extremely “meh” about said products for years. Don’t even get me started on their hideous dog crates. They’re terrible, but my dogs use them every single day. Unless we hire a carpenter to custom-build us a nice dog crate that doesn’t look like a dog crate, there’s nothing I can do about it—until now.

The market for thoughtfully-designed dog products exists. And finally, premium pet brand Fable is doing something about it. Fable just launched a new assortment of dog products that are both functional and well-designed. There’s a bed, a bowl, an innovative chew toy, all-natural wipes, and the crème de la crème: a dog crate that doesn’t look like a dog crate. I could weep.

”There’s no other corner of the pet market where the disconnect between animal products and human products is more extreme than in home gear,” Fable co-founders Sophie Bakalar and Jeremy Canade told Apartment Therapy. “Even though beds and bowls are so visible in our apartments, traditionally they haven’t been well integrated into modern home decor. So we thought it made sense to apply our practical design lens and minimalist aesthetic to make products that perfectly balance form and function.”

It was important to Bakalar and Canade that every item in the collection have a purpose. Wherever they saw the chance to improve on the “overlooked” and “under-designed” aspects of dog products, they took it—something that somehow, no one else in the pet product space is doing on a large scale.

“We chose very simple, clean lines for all the products and focused on the details so we could justify every design decision from a functional perspective,” Bakalar and Canade continued. “For instance, there’s no reason toys need to be neon pink or yellow, since dogs can’t even see those colors. We chose muted modern colors instead that would look right at home on your apartment floor.”

If you’re frustrated with clunky plastic crates and wire kennels, Fable’s dog crate will feel like the long-awaited answer to your pet parent prayers. It’s made out of wood and the door can be either metal or acrylic. When the door is down, it creates a cozy den-like feel that your pup will love. And when the door is up, it remains hidden, garage-door style. It looks so much like a side table that most people won’t even realize it’s a dog crate.

We’re also big fans of the dog bed. You’ll love it because it’s waterproof, stain proof, and scratch resistant. And your pup will love it because it’s filled with crushed memory foam.

These pieces are especially great for small spaces when you have no choice but to display your dog’s stuff. Not only will they fit right in with your home decor, but most importantly, your dog will love them, too.
