Paula Truscott; her partner, Martin Loorits; their toddler daughter; and their pet schnauzer have owned this 2150-square-foot house for three-and-a-half years: This is the first home we’ve owned together. Prior to this we rented tiny spaces, so it’s nice to have all this room to decorate and DIY in.
Martin is a cabinetmaker and I’m a marketing person who studies interior design at night, so it really is our canvas. A few months after we moved in, we got a dog and got pregnant so it’s now become a family home with lots of life and activity.
Describe your home’s style in 5 words or fewer: Vintage-inspired eclectic, and somewhat cluttercore.
What is your favorite room and why? Our favorite room is our home library. From here you get a very busy but beautiful view of our built-in emerald green bookcase full of book collections and our five-meter-wide gallery wall!
We’ve recently updated this room to include an upcycled blank panther coffee table, which is a real conversation piece. There’s a heap of color in here and I love being able to see most of the living space from our mustard Chesterfield [sofa].
What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? We prefer to buy furniture secondhand where possible — not just for the cost, but also because there are so many decent options out there. Two of our most recent Marketplace finds have been a drum-shaped side table that retailed for $369 but bought secondhand for $50, and a $1100rrp mid-century-modern-style entertainment unit we scored for $300. These have really helped make our home library that much better.
Any advice for creating a home you love? 1. Aimlessly and frequently shop/scroll secondhand. 2. Don’t worry about what your visitors might think. 3. Buy the weird shit.
