We mourn for the victims of the Buffalo supermarket shooting, the Laguna Woods church shooting, and those of the Uvalde school tragedy. We also mourn for the thousands of others who have been killed in mass shootings — a daily reality for far too long.

The year of our Marie Kondo 2019 was a heck of a year, not to mention the last one of the decade. We’ve had ups, we’ve had downs, and we’ve bonded over a bunch of memes and pop culture. So, like we did in 2018, we decided that we should close it out with a festive touch—by revisiting some of the year’s biggest and most viral moments, as told through mini Christmas trees. While it was very hard to pick just five, we think they represent 2019 in all its glory.

But we thought it could be fun to, er, grow the series: sending him into real homes where the plants aren’t always quite so healthy. We didn’t have any particular license to do a retrospective on 2018’s most joyful moments. But at the end of a pretty grim year, we felt like it. So we gave ourselves an excuse and decorated a whole bunch of miniature holiday trees in honor of them. Here are eight of the moments that made us pause, laugh, and connect.
