Arrangement for Studio That’s Less Bed-Centric?
Q: I live in a 495 SF apartment and I hate how my bed is so exposed. I would like to create more privacy and designated areas however I am at a loss on where to begin. I have pored over Pinterest and have found plenty of ideas but I’m still struggling. Right now the paint colors are very girly and I would like to bring in a more sophisticated palette, however, I think I need the proper layout before I go ahead and repaint! Please help!

How To Make My New Mail Slot Burglar Proof?
Q: Hi, Apartment Therapy! My soon-to-be husband and I are moving into a new (rented) rowhouse in Baltimore next month. About a week after we move in, we’re leaving for three weeks for our wedding and honeymoon, and I’m nervous about keeping the new place secure while we’re gone. I’m really not pleased with the mail slot halfway up our front door. I can easily see someone reaching in with some tool and unlocking the door. Replacing the door is not an option.

The Togo Sofa and 3 Cheaper Alternatives
One of those designs that inspires true passion on both ends of the spectrum – it seems you either love it or really don’t – Ligne Roset’s Togo is a classic. These sofas, loveseats, chairs, and ottomans are unique with their low-to-the-ground, casual styling and almost anthropomorphic folds. The design has inspired a slew of knockoffs, too (perhaps a true testament to the Togo’s status as a classic).

Good Question Revisited: A Before & After (Plus One More Question)
Last year, Manisha posed a question to the Apartment Therapy community about how to add some color to her living room. “It needs some oomph,” she said. “Right now everything seems to be grey, white and black.” Armed with your suggestions, Manisha added color in a few strategic places. Want to see what her living room looks like now?

Before & After: Metal Lyon Stools Get a Fresh Powder Coat
These Lyon steel drafting stools are straight from the architecture school where I was an undergrad over a decade ago. Rusted and layered with spray paint, they were pretty well-worn even when I was in school. Recently, when the department underwent renovations, a friend picked these up for free when they were discarded during construction. We paid him $5 each for the trouble of scavenging them and then started looking into refinishing.

How To Close Off Underbed To Pets?
Q: I have a rabbit that I normally keep caged but I’d like to be able to let him run around my room. Unfortunately, he loves small crawl spaces and likes to hide under my bed, out of reach, for hours. Is there an attractive, easy-to-assemble way to close off that space under the bed while still being able to access my underbed storage boxes?Sent by LindaEditor: Leave your suggestions for Linda in the comments – thanks!• Got a question?

Beautiful, Non-Electric Dehumidifiers?
Q: Hello! I was searching around in the Home Hacks and I found great suggestions for adding moisture to the air in a home without a humidifier, but I was wondering if anyone had any bright ideas for dehumidifying the air without a dehumidifier? Dehumidifiers are loud, not very attractive, and an energy drain. Are there any non-electric (and even better–beautiful) solutions for a humid basement or closet? Thanks!

Vinegar Prevents Squirrels from Eating Jack-O-Lanterns
This is coming a day late, but we’ll be filing this away for next year: When we prepped our stoop for trick-or-treaters last night, we swept the stairs, turned on the lights, then went to light a candle in the jack-o-lantern. That’s when we noticed his face had been gnawed away – eyes, nose, and mouth – into one gigantic hole:Squirrels are relentless at this time of year as they prepare for the long, cold, and fruitless winter.

Before & After: Guest Room Paint Job
This is the tiny guest room at the end of the hallway in my house. It started off as an ugly room with paneling and a paint job that was old and worn. It sorely needed a new coat of paint, and since I didn’t love the room to begin with, I felt brave enough to do something bold:The room is seriously small – it really only fits a full size bed. Remembering that small rooms really can go dark, I took the plunge.

Before & After: Built-In Shelves
You know the pair of built-in dresser drawers in my master bedroom? Well, there’s a smaller second bedroom that has just one set of drawers on the left side of a similar dormer window. On the opposite side of the dormer, there used to be just a blank wall. It was a blank slate, an opportunity to install a partner to the dresser:My husband and I came up with a shelf design as a complement to the dresser.

Before & After: The Bedroom Desk Gets Organized
A small desk in the dormer window of my bedroom has never really been used properly. The desktop has always been a catch-all for books, clothes, and papers at the end of the day. And the drawer, well, the drawer was even worse. I finally set aside some time to give the area some attention, and it paid off:Now, instead of sitting on the floor at the coffee table, I have an inviting and functional nook to use for work.

Color Combo: Olive Green and Sky Blue
Green and blue is an all-time favorite combo of ours. It can go very springy, but darken it up a bit and tame it down with dark olive greens and dusty blues:The kitchen up top exemplifies this color combo, with muddy green cabinetry and crisp blue walls.

How To: Paint Over a Chalkboard Wall
When we talk chalkboard paint here at Apartment Therapy, there are invariably those who voice that the trend has run its course. Do you agree?…If you do, and if you have the trend painted onto a surface in your own home, here’s how to paint over it: Clean the wall thoroughly and allow to dry fully. Use fine sandpaper to lightly sand the surface of the chalkboard paint. Pay particular attention to the edges, as chalkboard paint may sit higher than the rest of the paint on the wall.
