When we moved into our 750 square foot rented apartment, this closet became a catch-all for boxes and items that didn't otherwise have a place. But when we saw the pink plus sign, we decided that this black hole of unpacked boxes would be the perfect nook for our little girl.

Covering up old (lead?) paint was a priority, but of course, so was making the most of the 30x50 inches of floor space. Yes, that was inches.

Daddy took off the wooden door and revived an old sewing machine to make a sound-dampening curtain. A column fan turned on its side was mounted above the doorway to supply fresh air and white noise. Mini crib options were limited: the Bloom Alma Urban was the only one that would allow an adult to slide in and tuck in a sleepy girl. Her next mattress, gifted from friends, just fits under the faux floor. It's padded and carpeted to prevent late-night cries from reaching the downstairs neighbors.

Overhead, fabric from the curtain conceals some more sound dampening material for the sake of the upstairs neighbors. A few shelves make use of the vertical space. Minus the crib (a gift from grandparents), we only needed to spend around $100 to turn an ugly dark closet into a cozy sleeping nook. The best part is we can very easily take everything but the paint with us when we buy our own home.
