I love the idea of going back-to-school shopping without having to go through the actual back-to-school rigamarole (but good for all of you in school!). Back-to-school sales are particularly exciting, especially when they happen at my favorite shops...
Notebooks: Absolutely crucial. The trapper-keeper of your secrets, doodle, crushes, games of M.A.S.H., and brilliant ideas. Postalco Notebooks from Japan are stylish and sturdy, with starched and waterproofed cotton covers ready to be covered with band stickers.
Bookbag: Since I no longer have to carry around 7 textbooks plus notebooks, I can scale my trusty bag down a bit. Handmade by Holly Samuelsen, the Leather Envelope is sleek, yet large enough to hold a paperback book. You should always have a book.
Advanced Ceramics: I love hand-thrown pottery, but much of it is a bit too rustic for my taste. These mugs by Patricia Yenawine of Bolinas, California are solid but elegant.
Recess: We might not get to run around in fields everyday like we used to, but Juniper Ridge Incense brings the fresh air indoors, with none of that ubiquitous incense funk. Or Red Rover trauma.
Sewing 101: My mom has always kept a pair of folding scissors in her purse, and I keep meaning to start. TSA-approved, so their perfect for in-flight embroidery!
Around-The-Water-Fountain: Discuss the crucial topics of the day (gym shoes, hot gossip, last night's episode of "A Different World") with style- the recycled carafe & glass from Spain.
After-School Snack: All that work has definitely earned you a Mexican Coke or local beer. It's funny: the classic wall-mounted bottle opener is only $10, but it conveys such a sense of permanence and confidence. We are going to be living here for a while, and we are going to open our bottles with class.
