When we bought this tired little cottage, we didn’t really know what we’d gotten into. Sitting empty for 3 years, the pipes had burst, the furnace had died and there was a small lake in the basement. Oh – and it was truly the homeliest house on the block.

We had just started our ‘encore career’ to buy and renovate homes in a little town in Maine. But this project was a bit daunting for newbies! It took 5 months of work to transform it from top to bottom. Farewell ugly vinyl siding, rusty screen door and blah front facade. A new porch roof provided some interest, along with a new front door and a window on the funky old addition..

The interior got a complete makeover as well. Walls were opened up to create a circular floor plan. The miles of knotty pine ‘pickwick’ paneling were cleaned up and painted. The bathroom in the kitchen got moved to the second floor (where it made a lot more sense). And a gleaming new kitchen completed the transformation.

Was it worth all that hard work? Absolutely. The diamond in the rough really has some shine! You can see more on our blog!

Thank you, Laurel & Richard!
