- My room makeover::
- My former living room had its charms, but the colours were too intense to live with. I didn't like the mismatched sofas and how busy the white moldings looked against the mustard yellow walls. The room is an irregular hexagon in shape (with an angled fireplace on the left). It's hard to tell from the before photo but the room had a bowling alley effect. This project took me two years on and off because I couldn't commit to a look. I designed the new fireplace myself, and that took ages.
Sofa - American Leather, in cotton velvet sleeper model: $5,000.
Chairs - about $1,000 each.
Rug - Beni Ourain knockoff in pure wool, $1,800
Fireplace - required re-venting up to the roof, about $5,500.
Custom linen curtains and rods - about $2,000
- My makeover advice::
- If you're going to spend a lot on furniture, get a professional to help you find pieces in the right size and scale for the room. Even after tons of measuring, my furniture still felt a bit bulky when it arrived. We're making it work but the boxy chairs are a little jarring with all the angles in the room. Also, never underestimate how much you can change the feeling of the space by adding or subtracting accessories that trick the eye into experiencing the dimensions differently.
- What I love most about my new space::
- I love that the layout finally feels right when I'm sitting in the room (or as right as it can feel in a lopsided hexagon!). The fireplace is a huge improvement, and the room no longer feels like such a mishmash of elements. One of my favourite pieces is the artwork above the chair on the left - it was done by my 7-year-old son. I also love the round carved wood table in the middle of the room and the calmer feel all around.
