- My room makeover::
- The front living room in our new house began as a blank slate. It had (and still has) low ceilings, but we mounted the curtains higher to make the walls seem taller and went with shorter furniture to draw attention away from the room's shortcomings. We also painted the walls a cool, light blue color to freshen it up. The new space has a vibrant feel that it definitely didn't have before. One of the first things I started with was the rug (because I find it intimidating to find affordable, attractive rugs) so I wanted to get it over with and plan the rest of the room around it. Once I found the rug (actually an indoor/outdoor rug), then I began thinking about the wall color. I chose an energetic blue called Tradewind from Sherwin Williams. For the furniture, we wanted to combine a number of styles but still stick with the airy, slightly glam look that the space had begun to take on. We already had the sofa, and the Eames chair was my grandmother's.
- My makeover advice::
- I would recommend starting with pieces that have personal meaning to you, and then decorating around them. Sure, you could just buy every single thing online and it would probably look lovely... but the space wouldn't feel like your own. After all, your home is supposed to be where your heart is, right?
- What I love most about my new space::
- I created a gallery wall behind the bar cart, filled with artwork from a mix of different sources; my mom did the pencil-drawn figure back in art school, and I painted the eye years ago. The wave drawing is a print by artist Zaria Forman, who I was friends with in college. They all have some sort of meaning or memory attached to them... and they make me smile!
