- My room makeover::
- Six months ago this room was a chaotic mess of exposed insulation, industrial carpet and piles of junk. Now it’s an office/guest room and my favorite space in the house. My husband and I redid the whole thing ourselves - putting in a closet (using an old door we found in the shed when we moved in!), designing and building the shelves and window seat, and installing wood floors. We spent about $1600 for everything, including much of the furniture and decor.
- My makeover advice::
- We were really deliberate with this process (much more so than with previous projects), and I think that's a large part of why it turned out so well. I created inspiration boards, we made lists of how the room needed to function, and we spent a lot time designing and re-designing the closet, shelves, and cabinetry. We were lucky because we didn't have a strict timeline, so we worked on it over the course of many months. Some of my favorite elements - such as the bookshelves that curve in toward the window - evolved because of that extra time.
My advice to others is that making a thorough design plan is invaluable, and that the insidious nature of drywall dust can not be overstated!
- What I love most about my new space::
- I love that it's both very pretty and very practical, and that we made it ourselves. And that window seat, I really love that window seat!
