- My room makeover::
- The kitchen in our 1962 split level was dark and depressing. But when the appliances started to bail, we knew it was time for a makeover! We went in 3 phases, first replacing the counters and taking out some cabinetry, then adding trim to cabinets and painting them. Finally, we took out a wall, retiled the floor and walls and built and island. The entire project took 2 years, but we did all the work ourselves except for the counters. And the best thing about this remodel is it cost us under $5,000! And that's for all new appliances, materials and counters. We saved money by buying tile and light fixture parts at ReStore. (My husband took lights from Home Depot and Frankensteined them together with the ReStore parts for the lights over the island!) He also made the island by putting 2 cabinets together and using a butcher block table top from Craigslist. It is by far the best work we have done yet, and I love walking into this room every day!
- My makeover advice::
- Live with your room for a while before tearing into it. It will force you to get more creative and will allow you to see things differently. This room presented some problems, like the tiny wall oven. When we took it out of the cabinetry, there was a huge hole that we didn't know what to do with. But we lived with it for a few months and figured out it would be the perfect spot for a recessed microwave and shelves with some baskets for potatoes, onions and baking supplies.
- What I love most about my new space::
- Every single thing! The kitchen is so much brighter now! And everything was my decision. It works so much better for my family. But if I had to narrow it down, the best thing would have to be the island. We do everything around the island - making it doubled my counter space.
