- My room makeover::
- This long narrow room always lacked a focal point, and it was very difficult to design a comfortable space. Since we moved in 3 years ago, a built-in shelving unit has been a dream of mine. We first began budgeting for our project and slowly started to acquire the materials. We began constructing the side cabinets, and later the shelving. Next was the middle construction with the electric fireplace and mantel. We used tongue and groove horizontally behind the shelving units and behind the TV. We installed some marble mosaic tile as the fireplace surround. This was probably the most daunting part of the project. Tiling is not our forte! We finished the project with some (a lot) of caulking and white paint. Cost: Used 12" x 24" Electric Fireplace-kijiji.ca-$50, Full Motion TV Wall Mount-NewEgg.ca-$70, Tile-Happy Harry's-$80 ($8/sq ft), Wood/Moulding/MDF/Crown-Home Depot-$300, Hardware-Rona-$50, Total approximately $550
- My makeover advice::
- Unexpected problems/costs are always going to come up. No matter how much planning you do, everything is not going to work out exactly as planned. Try and make it work, and don't get discouraged.
- What I love most about my new space::
- I love how functional this space is now. There is great storage, and it went from a room that we rarely used, to a room that we spend most of our time. It was definitely worth the investment and I just hope that it added some value to our home!
