My room makeover::
We have a lovely Colonial with a hideous 80s addition that included a small kitchen that was not seamlessly integrated to the original home. The addition was only accessible though a narrow hallway that included a wet bar, pantry and entrance to the dining room. The addition contained the small kitchen and larger den. Because it was closed off from the rest of the house, and has a back staircase, we regularly used only the tiny appendage of the house and never much used the large, grand living room or dining room. We contemplated this renovation for years, and dabbled around with architects and design-build firms getting estimates and ideas to help our very awkward space. We made the decision, after some cash inflow, to renovate. We worked with an architect who made the bold recommendation to flip rooms, exchanging the den for the kitchen to give a larger space. The total cost including appliances was about $100K
My makeover advice::
Do not rush into big decisions. It may seem that you simply can no longer live with a problem area, but you can. It will be difficult to live with regrets over hastily made decisions.
What I love most about my new space::
I love everything about my new kitchen, but the range and tile backsplash are everything I'd hoped for and more. It's a gorgeous entry into what is otherwise a really awkward space and it totally draws attention away from big things we simply couldn't fix.
