My room makeover::
We walked into our apartment for the first time and knew there was a great view out there somewhere...past the big wall that is no longer there! It was a plain white box and we combined an inexpensive Ikea kitchen with a custom antiqued mirror backsplash to have it no longer look like an inexpensive Ikea kitchen. We added custom lighting, overhead "garage door" cabinet storage, and moved the fridge to what was once an extra foyer closet to elongate our workspace.
My makeover advice::
Find a custom element you love and a way to incorporate. I'd dreamed for years of having an antiqued mirror backsplash, after our trip to Paris and seeing them in so many restaurants.
Add several lighting options that can be used when/where you need it, not just one light that is always on or off. Even in a rental-spruce up the look with new lights you can take with you.
We thought WAY outside the box to move the fridge to what was technically the foyer. Don't rule out a great idea even if it seems crazy at first...flesh it out and see what you can do if it will give you what you need.
What I love most about my new space::
We can now see for about a mile North from our front door, have more storage than we even need (in NYC!), and can entertain while cooking.
