With such a large and in charge antique headboard, Chelsea's bedroom was looking one-note. Deciding to create an accent wall behind it, she fell in love with, and then rejected, some really expensive wallpaper. See how she transformed this bedroom for $40!

From Chelsea:

For years I have had the pleasure of owning an antique family heirloom bedroom set, (my great-great grandmother was born in the bed....TMI?)! I really wanted to give our master bedroom a more boho chic look and modernize our family heirloom bed. The headboard is quite stunning and grand, but it's not a look even remotely seen anywhere else in our home. I don't need or care to have every room in our home looking the same from one to the other, but I like there to be some continuity in the mix of styles. Our bedroom was previously a one-style show with the headboard taking center stage. And it was kind of a diva! I couldn't figure out how to mix anything else into the room until I finally thought about adding an accent wall right behind the bed!

I originally began looking at wallpapers and ended up falling in love with a bold, colorful pattern. At $225/roll, the paper would have cost $900 to cover our wall! This was when I changed course and started to consider stenciling. I had never stenciled a wall before but felt pretty brave for the sake of saving money! I finally came across an awesome stencil shop on Etsy called Cutting Edge Stencils. They sell their stencils in large 2'x3' sheets and include edger and corner stencils so it's easier to cover the entire wall. Their 'FUJI' stencil won my heart, and the $40 price tag sealed the deal. I had the perfect color navy blue paint on hand already, (and in a flat finish which is recommended), so when my stencil arrived in the mail I was ready to get to work! The large stencil sheet worked out great; I taped the stencil to the wall, used a mini-paint roller to cover one section entirely, then moved the stencil over to the next section, lining the pattern up. This entire project took less than two hours! The hardest part was moving the big ol' antique bed away from the wall and back!

Who would have thought that adding a busy pattern behind an elaborate headboard would work so well?! I'm so delighted to have found a solution for updating our bedroom without laying a finger on my family's heirloom piece. I had always adored that bed for its sentimentality, but now I think of it as a magnificent piece of art in our room.
