Before & After: An Old Sewing Table Gets a Summery New Purpose
Linda’s sewing table had been relegated to the forgotten pile in the garage for a few months until inspiration struck. What if she used the sewing table not for sewing but for…drinking. Enter the world’s cutest and most unexpected DIY bar!
From Linda: I suddenly remembered that under a mountain of randomness in the garage I had an old sewing table that I picked up at a garage sale back in the fall. The plan was to use it to practice my sewing, but honestly I still just use the dining room table. So this sewing table was just collecting dust.
Hubby had already removed the old sewing machine and its mechanisms back when I first got it. All that was left to remove was this overhang piece.
I primed and painted the sewing table using the same method that I used to paint the campaign nightstand. I went with the color seaside by Rustoleum, which is almost a perfect match to the chairs we have in our screened-in porch.
At this point it’s still just an old sewing table that’s painted a pretty color right?
Well, add a basic plastic storage bin from your local big box store and voila, you have a functional drink station.
Now originally I wanted a plastic storage bin that would go underneath the hole in the table, planning to secure it with screws so the bin would be permanently attached to the sewing table. However, hubby and I started talking about how we would empty out the water and ice once we were done using it. We couldn’t think of an easy way to do that if the bin was permanently attached to the sewing table.
We quickly had an AHA moment! Why not just get a plastic storage bin that has a slight overhang so it would just sit right in the hole. The beauty of doing this versus permanently attaching it to the sewing table, is that we can just pop it out when we are done using it, making easy work of getting rid of the ice and water.
I can see us using it for all sorts of gatherings. I really love how this turned out!
