Before and After: Creating a Much-Needed Coat Closet

Before and After: Creating a Much-Needed Coat Closet

By far the best part of our day job is the fact that it allows us to travel, and sometimes even to live, overseas. Though we love the experiences, this lifestyle does come with its own design challenges. When we made the move to Bosnia a few years ago, we had mixed feelings about our new apartment- the great view and semi-open floor plan were offset by the complete absence of built-in closets. Given our limited supply of wardrobes and the need to have open space to hang wet coats (the picture above is our old street on an average day in March), we had to get creative...

A trip to the local hardware store yielded a heavy-duty towel bar just the right size to hang under our open stairs. Turning that otherwise wasted space by the front door into a make-shift coat closet was one of the best changes we made to that apartment- our landlord was so impressed he rushed out to pick a towel bar for his own house!

This small project is definitely the most effective $10 we've ever spent on a DIY home design effort. Have any of you made low cost changes that had a big impact? If so, tell us about your project below...
