Before & After: A Long-Awaited Master Bath Makeover Was Worth the Wait
Name: Nicola Broughton
Location: Leeds, UK
Size: 3000 square feet
Years lived in: 13 years, owned
Despite the fact that Nicola Broughton—you likely know her as The Girl with the Green Couch—has created a truly one-of-a-kind, stunning home in the UK, she says on her website that she’s not one for “ripping out a perfectly functioning bathroom,” which is precisely why the she didn’t do much to the new-but-not-her-style main bedroom when she first moved into this house over a decade ago.
“So, I kept telling myself I’d wait a little longer and before I knew it, over 10 years had passed,” she wrote. “Ten years of dealing with every other job this Victorian house needed, because anyone with an old house knows, somehow there is always another thing that needs repairing.”
In her house tour, Nicola described her home’s style as “Dark, cozy, colorful, eclectic, maximalist,” and each room of the home matches that look. It helps that the home itself has a ton of architectural character, as well. “My home is full of Victorian period features, such as fireplaces, cove molding and stained glass,” she described in her house tour survey.
Part of what makes her talented as a designer is how she weaves in her own dark, colorful style with existing historic and architectural elements. But that’s also what made this bathroom project so different, due to some unforeseen plumbing issues.
“I’d never done a room from scratch, always having something to work with, be it furniture, lighting, carpets or flooring. This was an entirely blank canvas, it all needed to go, and to my mind a complete re-jig in terms of bathroom layout. With no bathroom planning experience, whatsoever what could possibly go wrong!”
