Many of us are relying on our homes more than ever this year. And inevitably, as we spend more time indoors, some of us are looking to tweak our spaces a bit to feel more comfortable for the long haul. One place to start? Behr just released their annual Color Trends Palette, offering a head start on creating a positive, cozy home for the year to come.

Behr’s 2021 Color Trends Palette is all about aiming to help balance the unpredictability the world is facing right now with what they’ve deemed as an “Elevated Comfort” palette. The key word is comfort. The color collection combines essential neutrals with lavish bolds to create an energizing yet comforting balance in the home

“This has been a year of unpredictability and 2020 has significantly changed our relationship with our home,” Erika Woelfel, Vice President of Color at Behr, said in a press release. “A new, ‘elevated’ articulation of ‘comfort’ goes beyond traditional beige, gray and green hues, and embraces color in a way that can redefine and enhance any type of space inside or outside the home.”

Behr compartmentalized their Color Trends Palette into six themes: Casual Comfort, Optimistic View, Subtle Focus, Calm Zone, Quiet Haven, and Outdoor Escape. The 21 different colors highlighted in the collection—all of which are exclusively sold at Home Depot—are bucketed in a way that allow for mixing and matching colors “from each of the themes to suit any design aesthetic,” according to the press release.

See below for a quick breakdown from the Behr team of each theme that evokes a particular mood, all of which tie back to that feeling of optimistic comfort.

Casual Comfort

Just as the name suggests, this theme aims to bring comforting vibes into the home without it being too formal. “Light and cozy neutrals offer an updated take on the casual farmhouse look, achievable with warm-toned hues like Almond Wisp PPU5-12 and Sierra N240-4,” according to the press release from Behr.

Optimistic View

Nothing makes me more happy than a terracotta and yellow combination, which puts the “Optimistic” in “Optimistic View.” According to the statement: “An eclectic mix of bright, luxe shades evoke a Mediterranean or ’70s glam vibe, featuring festive colors like Saffron Strands PPU6-02 or Kalahari Sunset MQ1-25.”

Subtle Focus

Pastels can bring softness into a space, and they’re a great way to add pops of color that blend in with neutrals. According to Behr, the soft pastels were inspired by modern takes on art deco design.

Calm Zone

The cool hues of blue and green are often associated with serene landscapes. “Nurturing blues and greens continue to trend alongside our society’s desire for self-care and wellbeing, with colors like Jojoba N390-3 and Voyage PPU13-07 creating calm, restorative spaces,” the Behr statement reads.

Quiet Haven

If you’re yearning to bring peace into your space without sacrificing on the decor front, then these darker tones in Quiet Haven could be a good choice. As the statement says: “Darker, evocative colors are fit for traditional and maximalist decor, with hues like Royal Orchard PPU11-01 and Broadway PPU18-20 at the forefront.”

Outdoor Escape

This particular theme is inclusive to the entire 2021 palette, as Behr suggests that any of the 20 colors can have exterior use at home—although they do call out a few in particular, including Barnwood Gray PPU24-07 or Cellini Gold HDC-CL-18.
