Best Kids Parties: Blue & White & Horses

My daughter "L" wanted a "blue and white horse birthday". The blue and white at first seemed like a challenge - how would I make it a feminine birthday when everything blue seems geared toward boys?

I used lace accents with doilies to add in a girly touch. Everything was DIY or handmade. The cake was a Strawberry Shortcake cake (the recipe was from The Pioneer Woman) and covered with homemade cream cheese icing that I tinted a light blue. The horse cake topper was an inexpensive plastic toy horse that I spray painted silver.

The bunting across the mirror was created by folding doilies in half, then cutting out the solid inside to make lace "horseshoes" stung up with baker's twine. The real horseshoe was ordered off Etsy, as was the felt crown and the dress. The lace crown on top of the gifts I made by stiffening crochet lace ribbon with modge podge, then sewing the ends together. It was finished off by weaving through a light blue ribbon and tying it with a long bow. We served homemade lemonade (which was great for cutting the sweetness of the cake and ice cream) with light blue striped paper straws.

Her gifts were simple but practical, including her new backpack and lunchbox for kindergarten, some carefully selected picture books, a new pair of cowgirl boots, and a cowgirl hat.
