Best Kids Parties: The Circus

As soon as I started thinking about Alice's 1st birthday party, I knew it would be circus-themed. From the day she was born (she's the 2nd child) I referred to our family as a circus. It seemed life became a crazy juggling act; who knew who was going to be the ring leader on any given day! So, it just seemed to fit naturally that Alice would be the ring-leader on her special 1st Birthday.

I've never had so much fun throwing a party as I did throwing Alice's 1st Birthday Circus party. The ideas and inspirations were seriously endless! We asked guests to come in their favorite circus attire - and we were impressed with the array of costume ensembles; from clowns, to acrobats, to ring-leaders - everyone came ready to have fun!

For decor, I kept things in the color scheme of pink, yellow, white and mint/teal. We used animal figurines that you might find at a circus, pennant flags, balloons, and a blue tarp- tent to shelter the food from the sun/heat.

The food included a simple, yet festive spread of corn dogs, different flavors of popcorn, several bowls of pink and white candy, frosted animal cookies, cupcakes, and old-fashioned soda (to be drunk with teal stripey straws, of course!). I also hand-dipped caramel apples (with a coordinating ribbon tied on each stick) for a party favor that guests could take home.

We had several game stations for the children; fishing for prizes, face painting, a reading corner with circus-themed books, a coloring station with circus coloring pages, and a ring of fire (a hula-hoop decorated with flames made out of felt that I found here -I referred to that post a lot while planning this party).

My favorite part of the party was the photo booth. I set up a simple corner with a pin-striped sheet as a backdrop, a tripod/camera, and a jar of hand-made props. I made the simple props using black & red foam from a craft store and wooden dowels. It was my favorite part because I asked each guest/family to make a stop at the photo booth on their way out; I now have a wonderful collection of fun photos of each of our guests from our party. I love that!

You can see some more of my inspirations on my Pinterest Board here All in all, the party was so fun and memorable. All of the guests had a great time, especially Miss Alice, our little Ring-Leader Birthday Girl - and that's what really matters, right?
