My 4-year-old is obsessed with trains and has been asking for a "choo choo train birthday party!" for the last six months. I was happy to oblige!
I settled on a vintage train theme with blue and orange as my colors. Almost all of my decor was found objects or junk I had collected over the years and was taking up space in my basement. I ordered a few vintage travel posters and a travel calendar from AllPosters to set the mood. I ordered whistles and hats as favors from Oriental Trading (truly one of my favorite party resources) and bought wooden trains for the kids to paint as an activity. I also turned cardboard boxes into train engines and turned my house into a train depot with a few rolls of electrical tape. Every kid took a turn racing around on the tracks.
My menu included classic party food like pretzels and popcorn as well as some creative train-themed food including: Stoplight Kabobs, Switch Cheese Sandwiches, Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Southwest Dip, Short Line Shortcake and Golden Spike(d) Lemonade.
The highlight of the party was definitely the electric trains from my own childhood. The kids loved seeing them light up and controlling their speed around the track!
