Name: Pippa (1)
Location: Brooklyn, NY

My husband and I are both Canadian. We moved to Brooklyn while I was pregnant with my daughter Pippa. She was born in New York and spent the first year of her life living in Brooklyn. We wanted to celebrate her first birthday somewhere memorable. When I discovered Jane's Carousel in Dumbo, nestled between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges, with a view of the Manhattan skyline, I knew I had found the perfect spot.

I decided on red and turquoise for the colors and a vintage carnival theme. For the invitations, I used a picture I had taken of my daughter sitting on one of the carousel horses. My inspiration for the party came from my own memories of childhood trips to carnivals and fairs.

The guests were mostly friends with children from Brooklyn, old friends from the northeast and Pippa's Godparents who were visiting from Toronto.

Jane's Carousel is open to the public during parties but we had a private section at the back. Guests enjoyed unlimited rides. The carousel is encased in plexiglass but since it was such a nice day the doors were open allowing guests to wander outside enjoying lovely views of the east river, the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges and the Manhattan skyline.

All of the vintage carnival themed paper decorations, like the signs, paper hats and cupcake circles were purchased on Etsy. Additional items such as popcorn bins, lollipops, a gumball machine and cotton candy were purchased from various sources, including Polka Dot Market, and Oriental Trading Company. I put striped straws in mason jars and red plastic cutlery in turquoise pails I found at Target. The paper plates, cups and napkins were all red with white polka dots. White metal basins held fizzy izzys, cokes and bottles of water on ice. There was also a large canister of lemonade.

For the food we stuck to the carnival theme with popcorn, peanuts, whoopee pies, turquoise M&M's, red licorice, and Grimaldi's Pizza. There were also tons of golden yellow cupcakes with a delicious home made butter cream frosting in vintage blue. Pippa enjoyed her first taste of sugar after blowing out her candle and devouring one.

Lovely - thanks Holly!
