We first started focusing on small sofas in 2004, when my brother was looking for one and having a really hard time. Since then the market has changed and manufacturers have become a lot more savvy about offering smaller options. Here, then, are my brother's guidelines and my top pics for 2008.

"It must be less than 76 inches long and 36 inches deep, and I don't want it to look like a love seat."

>> Lillberg Sofa - Ikea ($279): Only 74" wide and particularly nice with the wood frame painted your favorite color.

>> Elba Sofa - DWR ($3600): This is a cool new offering that can be expanded and mixed and matched for when you have the room.

>> Neo Sofa - Two Seater - DWR ($3000): A smaller version of the Neo and with a nice replaceable slipcover option.

>> Eames Sofa Compact - HiveModern ($3200): A slim classic that sometimes reminds us of airport seating...

>> Overlapping Squares Daybed - West Elm ($930)

>> André Sofa - Room & Board ($1500): Looks big but it's actually only 76". Many color options here.

>> Chelsea Sofa - Room & Board ($1100): Only 66" but without arms it doesn't seem like a love seat.

>> Hans Wegner Daybed - Treadway ($2500): This is vintage, but available and just over at 77", but it's got more protein than any of the others.

>> Marcel Sofa - CB2 ($1000): This is a very nice inexpensive update on a classic modern shape. It's got a little edge too.
