Some people would be fine with keeping the windows open all year round, while everyone else is perpetually cold from October-April (at minimum). Living in a cozy throw blanket is fun for a little while, until you have to use your arms (ugh). If you’ve considered wearing gloves indoors, know that there is another way: a space heater. We’ve talked about space heaters before, and found that one of the most reliable brands is Lasko. That’s why we were excited to spot this ceramic portable option on Amazon’s Movers & Shakers section—and see that it has over 10,000 5-star reviews. And, right now, it’s almost 30% off!

“I’d find myself being careful about wearing layers indoors and still being cold and wearing double socks sometimes, and I had sewn two blankets together to be warm when sleeping,” said one reviewer. “But after buying this space heater I didn’t have to deal with any of these problems. I was free to just wear one sweatshirt and sleep with one blanket and not wake up freezing. The winter isn’t miserable and confusing anymore and I can finally just go about my life normally!”

This heater offers a range of adjustable settings with three modes, including fan only, low heat, and high heat, plus another dial to control the thermostat strength. It can easily heat a room up to 300 square feet and be carried around your home wherever you need heat. Morning chills? No more! Bathroom not heated? Tote it along while you’re brushing your teeth. Office not warm enough to your liking? Check with your employer that you can use one, and plug it in. (A few members of the AT team do this!)

It’s small enough to fit on a table surface, which is the safest option if you have kids or pets. When I got mine, I thought I would need a standing unit to heat my room. The heaters I had grown up with were triple the size and I thought that was what I would need to heat my space. I was so pleasantly surprised that the small size was more than enough to keep me cozy and warm all winter long, and at the end of the season it took up next to no space back in my closet.

As with any portable heater, you should not leave it on unattended. This Lasko model will auto-shut off if it overheats, but you should still never leave it on when you’re not around. Several reviewers suggested using an outlet timer or smart plug that lets you set when it turns on and off. “I was not able to find a space heater with a built-in programmable timer, I figured out the solution using this fan and a smart plug. Works great,” said one tech-savvy reviewer.

It also operates super quietly, so it won’t disrupt your sleep or your focus. “My only con is I can not hear it running :)” according to one pleased customer, who said her heater helped her living room go from 60 degrees to a comfortable 71 degrees.

All things considered, I’m convinced my portable heater is what kept me sane my first New York winter. And I’m not the only AT writer who thinks that—last year another writer wrote about her own experience with a similar Lasko space heater, and many fellow coworkers use them once the temperatures drop.
